Slow laptop? Five checks before you call for help
Simple steps that solve a surprising share of everyday performance problems.
1. Restart properly
Many laptops are only ever put to sleep. A full restart clears memory and finishes pending updates, which often restores normal speed.
2. Check free storage
When the main drive is almost full, the system slows down. Aim to keep at least 10–15% of the drive free by removing large unused files and emptying the recycle bin or trash.
3. Look at startup apps
Apps that launch at startup keep running in the background. On Windows, review them in Task Manager → Startup; on macOS, in System Settings → General → Login Items. Disable the ones you don't need.
4. Install pending updates
Operating system and driver updates frequently include performance and stability fixes. Back up important files first, then install what is waiting.
5. Watch for heat and noise
A laptop that runs hot or has a constantly loud fan may slow itself down to cool off. Use it on a hard, flat surface and keep the vents clear.
